The 3 Clues Hidden in Every Bad Golf Shot

Read them in the right sequence and your next fix becomes much easier

The next time you hit a bad shot, resist the urge to immediately change something in your swing.

Instead, look for three clues.

Read them in the right sequence and you can get much closer to figuring out what actually went wrong.

CLUE #1: Where did the club hit the ground?

With an iron, your turf contact tells you a lot.

Ground before ball? Your low point is too far back.

Catching it thin or topping it? The club may not be getting low enough at the right point.

Before blaming your head position, look at the things that influence low point—pressure shift, release, rotation and setup.

CLUE #2: Where did the ball START?

The starting direction gives you an important clue about the clubface at impact.

Starts right? The face was likely open to the target.

Starts left? It was likely closed.

Now add the final clue.

CLUE #3: Which way did it CURVE?

The curve tells you more about the relationship between your clubface and swing path.

A ball that starts near the target and curves right points toward a different problem than one that starts right and stays right.

Put the clues together:

GROUND → START → CURVE

Now you're not randomly changing your grip, stance or swing thought after every bad shot.

You're gathering evidence.

Because the shot you see is the result.

The real goal is finding the cause.

Remember these three questions after your next bad shot:

Where did the club hit the ground?
Where did the ball start?
Which way did it curve?

Those answers can tell you a surprising amount about what to work on next.

If you want to go deeper, The Big Book of Golf: Causes & Corrections helps you diagnose dozens of problems that can show up in YOUR game and find the appropriate correction.

And Best Ever Golf Drills is included, giving you drills to work on the problems you uncover.

Read the clues first.
