Swinging harder may actually be costing you yards.

Losing a little distance is one of the first changes many golfers notice as they get older.

A 7-iron that used to comfortably reach the green suddenly comes up short.

The natural reaction?

Swing harder.

But that can sometimes make the problem worse.

More effort often creates more tension in the hands, arms and shoulders. That can interfere with the sequencing of the swing and make center-face contact harder to find.

And a faster swing that misses the center of the clubface isn't necessarily going to produce a longer shot.

Try This 10-Ball Distance Test

The next time you're at the range, hit five balls trying to produce as much distance as you comfortably can.

Don't swing out of your shoes, but give them some extra effort.

Then hit five more balls at what feels like 80% effort.

On the second five, forget about creating speed.

Concentrate on just three things:

Loose arms. Solid contact. Balanced finish.

Now compare the two groups.

Don't judge them by which swings felt faster.

Look at which group actually produced the best combination of distance and solid contact.

A lot of golfers are surprised by what happens.

The easier swings may not only produce better contact — they can sometimes produce nearly the same distance or even more.

That's an important lesson for golf after 50.

The goal isn't to recreate the swing you had 20 years ago.

It's to find the most efficient way to create speed, distance and solid contact with the swing you have today.

And that may require different strategies than the ones you've been using for years.

Senior Golf Playbook was created specifically around that idea.

It covers practical ways older golfers can adapt their game for changes in mobility, strength, speed, balance and consistency — without simply accepting that their best golf is behind them.

You don't necessarily need to work harder at your golf swing.

You may just need to start working smarter.

Say Good-Bye to Low Point Control (for now)

If fat and thin shots are still costing you strokes, don't put this one off. Low Point Control disappears Sunday at midnight —

The response to Low Point Control has been incredible because it solves one of golf's most frustrating problems. If fat and thin shots still show up too often, this is for you.

Until next time,
