One of the fastest ways to lower your score has nothing to do with your swing.

It starts with making better decisions.

Before every shot, ask yourself two questions:

  1. How good is my lie?

  2. How much risk is in front of me?

That alone can change how you play an entire round.

Here's a simple decision guide.

Lie

Risk Ahead

Smart Decision

Perfect fairway lie

Very little

Be aggressive if the reward justifies it.

Light rough

Moderate

Favor solid contact over chasing distance.

Deep rough

Water, bunker or trouble

Advance the ball safely. Don't force a hero shot.

Fairway bunker

Lip or long carry

Get back in position rather than gambling.

Ball below your feet

Tight target

Aim for the natural fade instead of fighting it.

Ball above your feet

Left trouble

Allow for the draw and adjust your target.

Buried bunker lie

Any pin

Escape first. Forget the flag.

Notice something?

The swing never changed.

Only the decision changed.

That's one of the biggest differences between golfers who consistently shoot lower scores and those who don't.

Higher handicaps often ask:

"Can I hit this shot?"

Lower handicaps ask:

"Is this the right shot?"

Those are two completely different conversations.

Golf becomes much simpler when you stop trying to pull off the perfect shot and start choosing the highest-percentage shot.
